Background of the Study

Discourse strategies in ceremonial contexts such as wedding speeches are critical for conveying cultural values and social relationships. In Igbo wedding speeches in Onitsha, speakers employ a range of linguistic and rhetorical techniques—such as praise, storytelling, and humor—to construct a narrative that celebrates union, reinforces social bonds, and affirms cultural identity (Ikechukwu, 2023). These speeches are not merely celebratory but also serve as a medium for transmitting social norms and expectations. This study investigates the discourse strategies used in Igbo wedding speeches by analyzing linguistic features, narrative structure, and rhetorical devices. By utilizing a combination of qualitative discourse analysis and thematic content analysis, the research aims to identify how these strategies contribute to the overall effectiveness and coherence of the speech. The study will also examine the interplay between formal ceremonial language and colloquial expressions, highlighting how speakers navigate between tradition and modernity. Findings from this research are expected to provide insights into the social functions of wedding speeches and inform cultural preservation efforts and communication training programs (Chukwudi, 2024; Nwachukwu, 2025).

Statement of the Problem

While Igbo wedding speeches are a vital part of cultural ceremonies in Onitsha, there is limited research on the specific discourse strategies employed in these contexts. Existing studies often generalize across various ceremonial speeches, failing to capture the unique linguistic and cultural nuances of Igbo weddings. This gap hinders our understanding of how these strategies contribute to effective communication and cultural transmission during weddings. Without targeted analysis, it is challenging to develop educational and cultural interventions that support the preservation and enhancement of these traditional discourse practices (Ikechukwu, 2023; Chukwudi, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

1. To identify key discourse strategies in Igbo wedding speeches.

2. To evaluate the impact of these strategies on speech coherence and cultural transmission.

3. To propose recommendations for preserving traditional discourse practices.

Research Questions:

1. What discourse strategies are most frequently used in Igbo wedding speeches?

2. How do these strategies affect the overall coherence and cultural message?

3. What measures can be implemented to preserve effective discourse practices?

Significance of the Study :

This study is significant as it explores the discourse strategies in Igbo wedding speeches, contributing to a deeper understanding of cultural communication and social cohesion. The findings will inform both academic research and practical efforts in cultural preservation (Ikechukwu, 2023; Nwachukwu, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:

This study is limited to examining discourse strategies in Igbo wedding speeches in Onitsha using qualitative discourse analysis, without addressing other types of ceremonial speeches.

Definitions of Terms:

• Discourse Strategies: Techniques used to organize and convey meaning in spoken language.

• Wedding Speeches: Formal addresses delivered during wedding ceremonies.

• Igbo: A language and ethnic group in southeastern Nigeria.
